One of our favourite recent stories from the tracks comes from Kane and Stewart, two South Australian rail fans who recently raced The Ghan all the way to Darwin.
Their journey began at the iconic Heavitree Gap in Alice Springs, where they timed their arrival perfectly to catch the train cutting through the red rock. From there, it was a 1,489 kilometre adventure along the Stuart Highway with campfires, roadside meals, and a mission to capture The Ghan as it wound its way to the Top End.
They stopped in Katherine to photograph the powerful NR class locos in the yard, before chasing the train for the final 300 kilometre stretch north. Delayed by roadworks, they missed The Ghan at the Elizabeth River, but made it in time to see her roll into Darwin’s terminal at Berimah.
A different kind of journey, captured beautifully.
