In 2027, the legendary northbound journey from Adelaide to Darwin enters an exciting new chapter, extending to four days and introducing a collection of immersive Off Train Experiences along the way. With new stops in the Clare Valley and Flinders Ranges, the journey offers an even richer introduction to the heart of Australia before continuing north into the Northern Territory.
A new beginning in South Australia
The journey begins in Adelaide, with the first evening taking guests into the celebrated Clare Valley wine region. At Penobscot Farm, a signature dining experience awaits in a reimagined nineteenth-century shearing shed, where seasonal produce from the regenerative farm is paired with the region’s renowned wines. It is a wonderful introduction to South Australia’s food and wine culture, bringing local produce, people and place together around the table.
The following day, the scenery shifts as The Ghan arrives in Port Augusta, opening the way to the ancient landscapes of the Flinders Ranges. One of Australia’s most remarkable natural regions, this rugged landscape is shaped by millions of years of geological history, with dramatic ranges, deep gorges and striking red rock formations. Guests can explore the region’s natural beauty and rich heritage, including a visit to the historic town of Quorn and the ruins of Kanyaka Station, before returning to the train for another evening on board.

Into the heart of the Northern Territory
As The Ghan continues north, the landscape transforms once more. Wake to the striking colours of an outback sunrise at Marla, a remote South Australian outpost near the Northern Territory border, before settling in for brunch as the train travels towards Alice Springs.
Set against the backdrop of the MacDonnell Ranges, Alice Springs is a place of remarkable character, shaped by deep Aboriginal heritage, pioneering history and a strong connection to the surrounding desert country. Through a choice of Off Train Experiences, guests can explore the town and its stories, venture into the West MacDonnell Ranges to visit iconic natural landmarks such as Simpsons Gap and Standley Chasm, or encounter the unique wildlife and ecosystems of Central Australia at Alice Springs Desert Park.
Further north, the landscape gives way to the tropical beauty of Katherine, where towering sandstone cliffs, winding waterways and lush vegetation offer a striking contrast to the arid Red Centre. Here, guests can cruise through the spectacular Nitmiluk Gorge, a place of deep cultural significance to the Jawoyn people, and hear the stories of Country from the water. Alternatively, experience the lives of those who call the outback home at the Katherine Outback Experience or explore the fascinating limestone formations of Cutta Cutta Caves.

Discover more of the Northern Territory
The journey concludes in Darwin, a vibrant tropical capital where outdoor living, multicultural influences and a rich cultural heritage come together. With its waterfront dining, lively markets, tropical gardens and spectacular sunsets, Darwin is an inviting place to linger a little longer and experience more of the Top End.
Beyond the city, the Northern Territory offers even more to explore. From the cascading waterfalls and monsoon forests of Litchfield National Park to the ancient escarpments, wetlands and remarkable Indigenous rock art of Kakadu National Park, the region is home to some of Australia’s most extraordinary natural and cultural landscapes.
Make more of your journey by extending your stay with a Journey Beyond Rail Holiday Package or a City Stay in Darwin. Whether you choose to explore the Top End, venture deeper into the Red Centre or simply enjoy a few more days soaking up Darwin’s tropical lifestyle, there are plenty of ways to continue the adventure beyond The Ghan.
