Australia’s greatest wilderness
When many think of Australia, often the first iconic destinations that come to mind are the Great Barrier Reef, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Uluru. While these beautiful locations highlight the incredible diversity of Australia’s landscape, few can match the rugged beauty of Australia’s greatest wilderness, the Kimberley.
Once described by Sir David Attenborough as one of the world’s “greatest natural wonders”, the Kimberley boasts a coastline stretched over 12,000 kilometres between Broome and Darwin and is larger than 75% of the world’s countries.
Home to some of the world’s oldest cultural landmarks, rich with biodiversity and geological wonder, many parts of the Kimberley are inaccessible by land. That’s why we’ve partnered with PONANT, pairing the legendary journey of The Ghan through Australia’s Red Centre with a voyage on one of PONANT’s luxury small ship Le Lapérouse or Le Soléal across the remote Kimberley coast.
As you journey across land and sea, the wildlife changes just as the landscape does. In the open ocean, you’ll spot green sea turtles making their way past the Lacepede Islands, vast flocks of sea birds swirling through the sky, pelicans resting on rocks and dolphins dancing in the water. In the quieter waterways, it’s possible to spot short-ear rock wallabies on the riverbanks, and if you’re lucky, you might find the true king of the Kimberley: the crocodile. Between July and October, there’s also the opportunity to see humpback whales as they make their way from the Southern Ocean to warmer waters.
Each day you spend in the Kimberley brings with it a new adventure. Discover beautiful ancient formations, gorges, canyons, cliffs, boulders and sandstone that the Earth’s forces have moulded over millennia.
The Kimberley embodies the true meaning of great wilderness, one you can explore in Journey Beyond style.
