Journey Beyond the Tracks - From Adelaide to Perth

This suburban garden is inspired by travel on the Indian Pacific – one of Australia’s epic train journeys – linking two of its beautiful coastal cities (Adelaide and Perth) by crossing the stunning and unique Australian Outback landscape.

The design nods to the cities’ strive for Urban Greening and reflects the diverse landscape of both South Australia & Western Australia, and is jointly sponsored by the South Australian Tourism Commission, Tourism Western Australia, and Journey Beyond.

A journey across the Nullarbor

Journey Beyond the Tracks: Adelaide to Perth designer, Max Parker-Smith, travelled on the Indian Pacific and spent time in both South Australia and West Australia to find inspiration for the stunning and uniquely Australian RHS Chelsea Flower Show garden.

We reflected on this journey with Max, alongside his love of grass trees, in the Q&A article linked below.

Designer Profile

Max Parker-Smith | Maximillian Design

After graduating with a first in Creative Advertising, Max Parker-Smith went onto study at The Inchbald School of Design in 2018. He’s now an award-winning designer and founder of Maximillian Design – who  create landscapes with emotional depth; spaces that connect people to place through thoughtful, layered design, where the modern blends seamlessly with the romantic.

At the heart of every project is the belief that a garden should be a quiet space for emotion and imagination—one that invites, rather than imposes, meaning.

I see ‘Journey Beyond the Tracks: From Adelaide to Perth’ garden as a compelling platform to celebrate the diverse landscapes of South Australia and Western Australia. By incorporating distinctive materials and the warm, earthy hues of the outback, alongside a thoughtfully curated selection of native inspired planting, the garden aims to evoke the spirit and identity of both states.”
